# Cephable alongside platform accessibility

> How the mobile app fits with the accessibility features already built into iOS and Android.

---

iOS and Android only let their own built-in accessibility features control the whole phone.
Third-party apps, including Cephable, cannot. That protects your security, and it means
each tool has its own job:

- **The phone's built-in accessibility features** control the phone itself.
- **Cephable** turns your phone into a controller for your computer.

## Which tool for which job

| What you want to do | Use |
| --- | --- |
| Control the phone itself | The platform's own accessibility features |
| Control your computer from the phone | Cephable |
| Large, reliable buttons for computer actions | Cephable quick action buttons |
| Dictate into apps on the phone | The platform's dictation |

On iOS the relevant platform features are **Switch Control**, **Voice Control**, and
**AssistiveTouch**. On Android, **Switch Access** and **Voice Access** play the same role.

Cephable's screens are standard controls, so the platform's own switch scanning and voice
control can operate them. Someone who navigates their phone by switch can use that switch to
reach a Cephable quick action button, which then acts on their computer.

## A setup that works well

:::steps
:::step title="Set the phone up the way you normally would"
Configure the platform accessibility features you rely on for the phone itself.
:::

:::step title="Connect Cephable to your computer"
See [Cephable on mobile](/docs/mobile/overview).
:::

:::step title="Put your most-used computer actions on quick action buttons"
Make them large. They become targets your existing phone setup can already reach.

## Why Cephable does not replace these

Controlling the whole phone needs system-level permissions that iOS and Android do not give
to third-party apps. The built-in features are also tied closely into the rest of the
operating system, so they are the right tool for the phone itself.

On mobile, Cephable connects your phone to your computer, and adds Cephable features that
the built-in ones do not cover.
